1797 – In Boston Harbor, the 44-gun United States Navy frigate USS Constitution is launched. She is the oldest ship in the world still in commission. Old Ironsides rests at pier but I do wish she was on the open seas working again.

1781, Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General George Washington at the Battle of Yorktown, effectively ending the War of Independence. What I think is funny is he (Cornwallis) didn't have the stones to go surrender himself, he sent a aide to do it.
